I’m a Sucker for Animals

I recently saw pictures from the “Show your Soft Side” campaign on the Huffington Post and I couldn’t resist sharing some of my favs here.  I am both a dog and a cat person – I grew up with cats and I now have a dog.  If my husband wasn’t allergic to cats, I would have a kitty too.

Show you soft side - one tough cat

The dude looks pretty tough, but that cat is FIERCE. Work it baby.

Show your soft side - punk rocker with a pup

I love how the dog is like, “Daaaaaddd, you’re embaraaaaasssing meeeeeeee.”

Show your soft side - rescued doggie

Read the text in the black part of the picture. It made me tear up.

My dog is not really a rescue.  I got him for free from a friend who was placing another person’s unwanted pups.  I’d always wanted a dog, but had no idea how to deal with things like potty training and stuff in dogs.  I needed to get a trainer to train me as well as Captain.  I learned patience from my dog and I learned to be kind.  There is no animal more loyal and patient with humans than a dog.

I also learned that my husband was a good person by how he treated my dog.  The husb gave Captain snuggles, love, and attention.  He took him for walks and helped me pay for vet visits and grooming.  When the pup had massive allergies last year, the man I love helped me persist until the solution was found.  Good people respect and love animals – even if they are too tough to admit it.  It’s an old cliche, but actions really do speak louder than words.  Animals understand your actions and are rarely tricked by words.  That’s one of the many things that makes them so great.

If you want to help rescue animals, check out your local humane society.  My mom got her cat from the Humane Society.  Her cat (Gigi) has a similar story to Towpath in the pic above.  Gigi was left in a can of oil to die.  She was rescued and my mom adopted her despite the fact that she had asthma from her harrowing experience.  It’s now something like 10 or 12 years later and Gigi is an older girl, living loved and asthma free.  So, that leads me to another thing you can do for animals: Love them.  Spread the word about them.  And don’t tolerate their abuse.
